One of Switzerland’s most established outdoor brands is entering a new ownership chapter.
Mammut Sports Group AG, the 164‑year‑old alpine outfitter headquartered in Seon, Aargau, has been acquired by Chinese private equity firm CPE. The seller, Jacobs Capital, confirmed the transaction on July 30, 2026. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The deal marks a strategic shift for Mammut as it looks to accelerate expansion beyond Europe, particularly in China and the Asia‑Pacific region.
CPE, which manages over RMB 150 billion (approximately CHF 18 billion) in capital from around 200 investors, has signalled its intention to work with Mammut’s existing management team to drive growth in high‑potential Asian markets.
Strategic priorities include:
China has become a key battleground for premium outdoor brands as participation in hiking, trail running, mountaineering, and winter sports continues to rise among middle‑class consumers.
For Mammut, whose technical alpine heritage is deeply rooted in the European mountaineering community, Asia represents both a scale opportunity and a localisation challenge.

Jacobs Capital acquired Mammut in 2021 and oversaw a restructuring programme that repositioned the brand operationally and financially.
According to statements released alongside the sale:
The strengthened financial footing likely improved Mammut’s attractiveness to global investors seeking scalable premium lifestyle brands with heritage credentials.
Despite the change in ownership, Mammut will maintain its headquarters in Seon, Switzerland, where innovation, design, and development teams remain based.
CEO Heiko Schäfer and the existing management team are staying in place, with a stated commitment to preserving the brand’s:
This continuity suggests the acquisition is positioned as a growth partnership rather than a wholesale operational relocation.
The global outdoor apparel and equipment market has seen increased private equity interest in recent years, particularly for brands with:
Asian private equity firms have shown heightened appetite for acquiring established Western brands as consumer demand in China and Southeast Asia shifts toward premium and performance categories.
Mammut’s alpine legacy — founded in 1862 — provides brand equity that can be leveraged across emerging outdoor segments, including urban outdoor and lifestyle‑driven performance wear.
For landlords and retail strategists, the acquisition may signal:
As Chinese outbound tourism and domestic recreation continue to evolve, premium outdoor brands are repositioning to capture both adventure and lifestyle consumers.
CPE’s first task will likely involve refining Mammut’s Asia strategy while preserving its European credibility.
The challenge lies in balancing:
If executed effectively, the acquisition could position Mammut for a new phase of international scale without diluting its Swiss identity.
